Her due date came… and went….

So our sweet Evelyn disregarded the fact her due date was June 7th. Today is June 8th, and no sign of the munchkin. Chad and I were not prepared for  this one! We figured she would arrive sometime earlier this week. We visited Dr. Diebel for our 40 week appointment on June 6th and my blood pressure was a bit high. He wanted to make sure the baby wasn’t in any stress, so I went through a non-stress test. The NST is a monitor using two straps around my abdomen, one that monitors contractions, the other monitors fetal heart beat. For twenty minutes, Chad and I got to sit in recliner chairs while the monitors worked along. It was neat to hear her heartbeat for 20 minutes, it is interesting how quickly the fetal heart beats and any movement results in rapid increase, then decrease of the counts. She scored great, she was not stressed.

He asked us to come back the next morning to get my BP tested. It was fine. Dr. Diebel recommended we stay the course and wait another week until we talk about induction. We are going back to visit Dr. Diebel the last day of 41 weeks, but hopefully she will come on her own sometime this week.

I would be lying if I wasn’t a little disappointed…. We are so excited to meet her, I am feeling that maternal instinct to hold her coming on so strong these days. I guess she is really snuggly in my tummy and she is happy to hang out in there until she is ready. We are waiting….. 🙂

35 Week Appointment

Chad and I visited Dr. Deibel this morning for our 35 week appointment. Evelyn is sitting straight up in my tummy, we have a breech baby on our hands! He wanted to check her weight, so we got an additional sonogram today, a little bonus – we got to see her sweet face and find out she is about 6 POUNDS already! The sonogram was positive, she isn’t in any stress, her organs checked out great, and she is surrounded by plenty of fluid. We will give her another week to flip. If she doesn’t flip by next week, we may go to the hospital for an external cephalic version (ECV), this is a manual external manipulation of the baby to encourage turning. If she chooses to stay breech, she will delivery by cesarean section.

All said, she is healthy and at a good weight for 35 weeks. I am feeling good as well, one of her feet is resting on my bladder, which explains my constant need to visit the restroom! She kicks all the time and shows her personality already when Chad talks. Yesterday, we were laughing and she kicked as a sign she was included! Chad and I are having a great time talking about her arrival, she already has so much support and love!

I am headed to a meet and greet with a prospective pediatrician practice this afternoon. I am also going to preregister at the hospital – they encourage this so delivery day is smooth and the paperwork is already complete.

We are close!

Heartbeat

This morning while I had my head on Marci’s tummy talking to miss Evelyn as I do every morning, I was able to hear her heartbeat for the first time with my own ears without the assistance of a dopler or stethoscope. It was strong and easy to hear. I then grabbed the stethoscope so Marci could hear. It was hard to find with the stethoscope compared to my ear, but, I was able to track it down so Marci could hear it too. 6 more weeks!

Evelyn’s Nursery

IMG_2957

Evelyn’s nursery is really starting to come together! Marci made a mobile, my mom made sheets, drapes, boppy cover, and a changing pad, and my Dad made a custom alligator to welcome her home. Donna and Mark gave us the awesome pink gliding chair and Patti and Kirk gave us the chandelier. I put together the furniture, installed the lighting and new dimmer/ switches. Inside of the two dressers and closet is just about everything you would ever need to welcome your new baby in to your home. We are blessed to have so many wonderful family and friends and we truly appreciate everything that each of you has done to welcome Evelyn. We can’t wait to meet her!

Here are some more pictures of Evelyn’s nursery.

Baby Evelyn in 4D

Evelyn_4d

Well, it seems that our sweet Evelyn is a little camera shy. Today Marci went in for a 4D Ultrasound where the Sonographer found that she is still breech. This meant that there were hands, feet, and umbilical cord blocking us from getting a real high resolution view of her sweet face. We managed to get a glimpse of her but, we are going to try again during an appointment next week.

Baby Shower for Evelyn Jane! A Southern Belle in the Making!

Aunt Donna and Aunt Patti hosted a beautiful baby shower last weekend. There were about 30 friends and family that attended. It is a humbling and beautiful experience to be surrounded by people who are excited and anxious to meet Evelyn. The advice, stories, and presents were amazing!

Baby Shower

Donna and Patti decorated with a Southern belle theme, lots of pink and pearls! Donna made delicious cupcakes with pink icing, Karen made pearl necklaces that were actually gum balls, and we had a delicious Amaretto punch – complete with Mason jars for each guest. We ate chicken salad on croissants, and Patti even dyed goose eggs as decorations! There were many cousins at the shower, Reagan and Lola played alongside Avery and Bella, it was a great afternoon of families and excitement for another girl in the family!

Some of the highlights included Puff the Magic Dragon – Chad’s mom kept Puff from his infancy, it was originally a present from Grandma Sue. Karen re-stuffed Puff and gave me a beautiful picture with Chad and Puff together. Puff is currently happily nested in Evelyn’s crib waiting to meet her.

Grandma Sue gave Evelyn a doll that was Karen’s – the sweet doll actually made it through all the Rodrigues kids and grandkids – she is now also waiting in Evelyn’s crib, right along with Puff!

Baby Shower

We received a lot of the essential items, including the stroller, the car seat and multiple bases, the Baby Bjorn, and bouncy seat. Other fun items included a ton of great books (I LOVE books and cannot wait to read to Evelyn!), handmade burp cloths, monogrammed silver cup,  taggies, hooded towels, diapers, and many adorable outfits!

Baby Evelyn was showered with love! Chad and I are so blessed to have this amazing family.

We love you all and cannot wait for each of you to hold her!!

Shad fishing on the St. John’s River

Shad fishing on the St. John’s River south of Highway 46 on 02/02/2013. The shad run is starting to pick up. This video shows the typical technique I use. Cast upstream slightly, allow the current to pull the floating line until it is perpendicular to the shore, mend the line upstream, and then begin stripping once the line is perpendicular again. This technique ensures the fly has enough time to sink to the bottom.
This year I have found that 5 feet of fast sinking Airflo leader attached to the fly line along with 5 feet of 2x level tippet attached to #6 size flies weighted with 5/32 dumbells gets the fly down quickly and allows better presentation on the swing.
We started the day in 40 degree weather which warmed quickly to the mid 70s. Flies like orange/ white, or pink/ white kip tail clousers or shad darts have worked best up until today. Today, the solid orange shad dart was the only thing they would hit. It is amazing that something that has been successful on one day can be completely useless the next. Contrasting colors were all they would hit over the last month, but after a couple of cold dreary days, followed by a couple of clear days and they keyed in on solid orange. Just when you think you have figured it all out, they change!

It’s a GIRL!!!!

Well today is the day…

It’s a GIRL!!!

Oh and by the way…

Evelyn says “PEACE”

IMG_20130116_102258

The thread above is from the text message we sent out to our family following the ultrasound today where we found out that we are having a little girl… and what her name is. We decided on Eveyln Jane… Evelyn after Marci’s grandmother, and Jane because it’s Marci’s mom’s middle name.  My mom and dad were with us today and we were so glad to share this amazing experience with them. It took the Sonographer a few extra minutes to find the “important bits” today because the baby kept crossing its legs. That is when I think all of us in the room knew it was a girl! LOL. We feel so blessed today to have such wonderful loving support from our friends and family and we can’t wait to introduce our little Evelyn to everyone!

Signing off,
Proud Daddy

First Shad of 2013

I woke up early this morning and hit the St. John’s river. I caught 6 shad, several bass, crappie, sunfish, bluegill and even a catfish. 20+ fish today. I plan on savoring every moment of the Shad run this year. With a new son or daughter on the way, I am sure free time will be at a premium next year, although I will still try to get on the water and hone my skills so that I may one day share the experience with my kids. That is neat to think about!

I spent most of my free time in December tying flies for this year’s fly box seen here…

And here is a picture of the 1st Shad of 2013…

I caught one shad on an orange and white shad dart tied on a #6 hook with a 5/32 dumbell eye. All of the rest were caught with a pink and white kip tail clouser minnow tied on a #6 with a 5/32 dumbell. The water is still high on the St. John’s River and the current relatively swift for this waterway so I fished with a 5ft fast sinking leader connected to about 5ft of 10lb level tippet. This combination seemed to work well.
