Tour of California 2011

Marci and I came out to California to check out the final stage of the Tour of California with my uncle Joe. We headed out to Thousand Oaks around 10:00am, parked by the team buses, and spent some time checking out the vendor tents. We scored some serious schwag including the leader’s jersey for Marci, the break away from cancer jersey for me, a couple of t-shirts, cowbells, banners, etc and then had a delicious lunch at Sabor, a fantastic Mexican/ Tapas style restaurant. The food was fresh and organic, we had ahi tacos and organic chicken tacos, served in warm corn tortillas with jicama. Marci had a margarita, the juices super fresh and the tequila strong!

After gearing up, we rode our bikes up to the final turn on the circuit where we found less crowd and an excellent view of the race. The cyclists would be making 5 laps bringing them within just inches of our perch. Both Marci and I really enjoy watching a good bike race on t.v. but, there is definitely a buzz in the air when you are on the sidelines that just cannot be matched on the couch. As the cyclists took the turn, we were within inches of them. The vibe of the peloton as it passed is a force – they were moving so fast and the power was amazing to experience. Joe brought his iPad, so we were able to watch the race and get instant coverage. At the end, we headed back to the podium and watched the boys spray champagne at the crowd, a tradition at any cycling event. The weather was perfect, the event was a must see, definitely a bucket list item checked off today.

We had an absolute blast with my uncle Joe at the race!
